Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson, Sr. (born September 18, 1951) is an American neurosurgeon and the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Among other surgical contraptions, Carson did pioneering work on the successful separation of twins joined at the head. He was awarded Presidential Medal Of Freedom, highest civilian award in the United States, by President George Bush in 2008.
Dr. Benjamin Carson majored in psychology at Yale and graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He went on to complete both his internship in general surgery and residency in neurological surgery at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition, he served as senior registrar in neurosurgery at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Queen Elizabeth II Medical Center in Western Australia.
Ben is a Professor of Neurosurgery, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Pediatrics Johns Hopkins Hospital.At age 33, he became the youngest major division director in Johns Hopkins history. Carson has authored over 100 neurosurgical publications, along with three best-selling books, and has been awarded 38 honorary doctorate degrees and dozens of national merit citations.
